The best maternity leggings for yoga, Pilates and Barre

Do you need maternity leggings?

I’ve been searching for the best maternity leggings for yoga, Pilates and barre classes. With baby number three on board, I was only 10 weeks pregnant when I needed to move in to maternity leggings. As a teacher I’m often wearing leggings for 8-12 hours a day  – so comfort is essential. Yes, I usually do school pick-ups and drop-offs in my activewear – they’re my work clothes! So I’ve spent months trying out lot of different brands – so hopefully I can save you some time!

Some of our mums manage their whole pregnancy in regular leggings (lucky them!). Other mums wonder once they start wearing maternity leggings, why they waited so long! Maternity leggings are designed to accomodate your growing bump with a wider waistband shaped to come under your belly. Waistbands are also softer – so they don’t cut in to you! I usually like a firm, stitched in waistband but they gave me muffin top very early on- aside from feeling like my belly was chopped in half!

The reality is most of us will be wearing our pregnancy leggings for a while postpartum as well. Bodies don’t spring back instantly to their pre-pregnancy shape and you’ll appreciate the extra space (and softer waistbands) in maternity leggings when you’re post partum as well.

Lululemon Align Pant

Lots of pregnant mums swear by Lululemon Align leggings.  These were my first pregnancy purchase. I must admit I’ve

never been a fan of the Align- until I was pregnant. My usual preference is a firmer waistband so I’m not constantly pulling my leggings up, but I had  a completely different view with a baby on board! The Align leggings are beautifully light and soft. The waistband is wide and soft and they would probably have done me more than a few weeks if this had been my first pregnancy and my belly hadn’t popped out so early!

Lorna Jane Maternity Tight

If you loved the Lululemon Align but need more space for your bump- you’ll love Lorna Jane’s maternity leggings. These leggings are light and soft and have a similar buttery feel to the Lululemon Align. These are the leggings I usually grab when I’m teaching barre as I want something light and soft that I can move freely in. They have a waistband shaped to fit over your bump which you can wear up or folded down (which would also be great for post-partum wear. They come in 7/8, ankle biter and full length.

Active Truth

You can't talk about maternity leggings without mentioning Active Truth. Lots of our clients swear by Active Truth maternity leggings and it’s not hard to see why. I’m a massive fan of Active truth leggings. I was a fan of their regular leggings already. Active Truth use compression fabric which is great of you suffer from fluid retention like me (I always wear compression leggings when I fly long haul). The compression fabric is great for making your bump feel supported. The shaped waistband accommodates your growing bump and I’ve seen many clients wear these throughout their whole pregnancy (up to 41 weeks!) and post-partum. They come in a bike short, 3/4 , 7/8 and full length. There’s also a style with pockets. Apart from black and navy they currently have one print available – I am more than a little disappointed they no longer do a leopard print in the maternity legging (I have a mild obsession with animal print leggings). These are a great choice if you want to feel supported and a little ‘sucked in’.

Girlfriend Collective The Maternity Legging

These are my favourite maternity leggings right now! I can’t rave enough about them. Girlfriend Collective has an amazing story around sustainability. The fabric for these leggings is made from lost and discarded fishing nets. The packaging is 100% recycled and recyclable. The leggings are made in their  SA8000 certified factory in Hanoi, Vietnam, that guarantees fair wages, safe and healthy conditions, and zero forced or child labor. Take a look at their website and social media and you’ll see they really embrace bodies of all shapes and sizes. These leggings are super light and stretch making the, a good choice in warmer weather and barre classes! These have the widest waistband of all the maternity leggings I own so I am confident they will do the entire pregnancy, the waistband can also be worn folded down. These are the only bump bands with seams (flat-locked of course) that really shape to your bump- so I make it through a yoga class without wanting to pull my leggings up!
